Ad-Aware had a slump several years ago, but with the past several versions, the product has been getting better and better. This one's definitely worth celebrating.

The latest Ad-Aware uses not one but two detection engines for its on-demand and scheduled scans, as well as for its real-time malware blocking. In addition to the venerable in-house antispyware engine, the product uses the well-regarded Avira engine to detect viruses. This is the same antivirus engine used by Lavasoft Anti-Virus Helix, though my Lavasoft contacts were quick to point out that the actual mechanics of detection and removal differ significantly between Ad-Aware and Helix; only the detection engine is the same. Ad-Aware hasn't been tested by the independent antivirus labs, but the Avira technology gets generally good marks. European lab AV-Test was particularly laudatory in its assessment, giving Ad-Aware its highest rating in most categories.
